Microsoft founder Bill Gates and his ex-wife and philanthropist Melinda French Gates are staying true to their pledge of giving away their fortune. The former spouses announced earlier this week that they would donate $20 billion to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which they co-founded in the early 2000s.

Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is considered one of the largest charitable organizations in the world. Among other goals, the foundation works on enhancing healthcare and reducing extreme poverty across the world while also working on making education easily accessible.

“I hope by giving more, we can mitigate some of the suffering people are facing right now and help fulfill the foundation’s vision to give every person the chance to live a healthy and productive life,” said Gates after the news broke out.

Following the recent donation by Gates and French Gates, alongside a $3.1 billion annual pledge by Warren Buffet, the foundation’s endowment jumped to $70 billion, according to Fortune. This represents a significant jump compared to $49.9 billion in 2020.

Taking the discussion on Twitter, Gates revealed that he intends to give away all of his wealth to the foundation and will eventually drop out of the list of the world’s richest people. The most recent list compiled by Forbes magazine had Gates at no. 4 with an estimated wealth of $129 billion.

Microsoft founder Bill Gates is expanding its farmland portfolio. According to MoneyWise, Gates just received approval to finalize the purchase of 2,100 acres of farmland in North Dakota. He will reportedly shell out $13.5 million for the land owned by the potato growers Campbell Farms.

Gates faces several challenges in his attempts to acquire the land. The public wasn’t thrilled to learn about the news, while many believed the purchase was against a Depression-era law that forbids “corporations or limited liability companies from owning farmland.”

Attorney General Drew Wrigley looked into the matter and decided this particular land sale compiles with the law as Gates will buy it through an individual trust and then lease it back to farmers.

“If it complies with state law, the matter goes forward,” said Wrigley about the approval process. “If not, they’re informed they’re going to have to divest of the land.”

Despite coming from a tech background, Bill Gates has taken a keen interest in farmland in recent years. It is estimated that he currently owns around 269,000 acres of farmland across 19 states. One of the world’s richest people owns 69,071 acres in Louisiana alone and is the largest private farmland owner in the nation.

Don’t expect Microsoft founder Bill Gates to enter the cryptocurrency business, or NFTs for that matter, anytime soon. Gates touched on the topic during an appearance at TechCrunch Sessions: Climate 2022 event and branded crypto and non-fungible tokens as “100 percent based on greater fool theory.”

In terms of finances, the “greater fool theory” is based on buying an overvalued asset in hopes that it can be later sold for an even higher price to a “greater fool.” This is sustainable as long as there are enough “greater fools” who are willing to pay more each time.

Gates started by making a dig at the popular NFT collection “Bored Ape Yacht Club,” saying that “expensive digital images of monkeys are going to improve the world immensely.” He then explained that he is “used to asset classes, like a farm where they have output, or like a company where they make products.”

One of the world’s richest people continued by making the “greater fool theory remark” before saying that he isn’t involved in crypto or NFTs and that he is “not long or short” on either.

The crypto market is currently going through a rough period caused by a massive sell-off as investors are turning to more traditional assets. The world’s leading cryptocurrency Bitcoin has lost close to 35 percent of its value in the last month and is currently trading at around $20K. This is the lowest Bitcoin has been since late 2021.
