Meta is Developing Its Own AI-Powered Search Engine

Facebook and Instagram parent Meta is currently in the process of developing its own artificial intelligence-powered search engine.

According to a recent report by The Information, Meta undertook the project to reduce its reliance on Alphabet’s Google and Microsoft’s Bing. Currently, Meta’s artificial intelligence chatbot Meta AI is using Google and Bing to provide users with answers and updates about current events, stocks, and other news.

Sources close to the company said The Information that Meta’s search engine will be tasked to scour the internet and find information requested by the user before delivering it in a conversational manner.

AI search engines have recently been on the rise. Google and Bing already have integrated generative AI capabilities, while ChatGPT maker OpenAI recently launched SearchGPT, a search engine that combines traditional features with AI. A number of other AI search engines like Peplexity AI, Phind, and Andi are currently attempting to get a slice of the market as well.

Meta is currently involved in a number of other AI-related projects through its research laboratory Meta AI. Just recently, the company announced the arrival of Movie Gen, an AI-powered video and audio generator. It is also currently working on the latest entry in its open, generative AI models series Llama.
