Wednesday’s trading session on the U.S. stock market was mixed, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average recording gains while the S&P 500 finished flat and the Nasdaq Composite recording a loss.
The Dow Jones had a 0.44% gain, being up by 172.13 points to end the day at 39,056.39. This was the sixth straight trading session in which it recorded gains, marking the longest winning streak since December. The gains were powered by biopharmaceutical company Amgen rising 2.3%, aircraft manufacturer Boeing jumping 2.06%, and finance giant JPMorgan seeing its stock improve by 2.03%.
S&P 500 flirted with slight gain for the better part of the day, looking to record its fourth straight winning session. But the index flatted at the bell with 5,187.67 points.
Nasdaq, on the other hand, recorded a losing session. It was 0.18% down by the end of the day, finishing at 16,302.76. This was the second straight day with losses for Nasdaq.
Analysts point out that investors are likely being cautious about the upcoming earnings results. So far, the tech sector has mostly delivered on estimates or surpassed them, but there is doubt whether other sectors can keep up. Additionally, there is a concern that high interest rates will remain in place for the foreseeable future based on comments by Federal Reserve officials.
